An intruiging leak: Nokia Lumia 520 and 720

To tell you the truth: I hate leaks: it’s taking part of the fun out of going to an event like the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. There is less to look forward to – you’ve already seen what’s coming, the only thing you can wonder about are details and specifications.

Somehow @evleaks always seems to get the right pictures from someone – either they are terribly good in judging what is true or false, or they have contacts they can rely on in the industry. Wonder if they pay for the shots they get. I’ve been watching their twitter feed closely, and last evening they indeed had the new Nokia’s: Lumia 520 en 720. Here they are.

Nokia Lumia 520

Nokia Lumia 720

I didn’t run to my PC directly to share them – I hate leaks, right? But they made me think about a few things.

First: is this all? I dont see anyting that makes me hope there is some brilliant camerasensor in there. Also, the numbers show these devices – most likely – have  lesser specifications than the Lumia 820 and Lumia 620.

So chances you’ll find OIS  or whatever new PureView technology in there are minimal. The PR shot of the Lumia 520 is not even showing Carl Zeiss on the back – just a video on the screen (Deadmau5 in action), but the the PR shot of the Lumia 720 has Carl Zeiss on it, at least.

Another striking aspect is the huge Vogue logo on the screen of the Lumia 720.

Is that saying Nokia and Vogue will start some kind of collaboration? Will it be a  ”fashion phone”? Will it be targeted at women? Is this the “Catwalk” I’ve been reading so many rumours about? I just downloaded the Vogue app which is giving the latest fashion news (not my cup of tea).

And what’s the black logo above Vogue about, do you know? It looks like some kind of fashion brand, but I can’t think of which. Also: who is the person next to that? Makes me think of Psy (Gangnam Style), but maybe you know better than that.

Also, Nokia is communicating the Photobeamer application, so there is some focus on making pictures in the marketing of the Nokia Lumia 720.

But the most important question is: where is the next Nokia Lumia PureView device –  the so-called “Nokia Lumia EOS”, or maybe it will be called the Nokia Lumia 1020. Where is it? Did someone accidently forget to leak it? Not a chance: @evleaks has always been pretty much complete in its leaks (although I think it missed the Blackberry Q10, so there is still hope).

My guess, however, is that it’s not there – not yet. Not ready to be announced. Because as soon as you announce a device, the market will scream for it, will want to buy it within a month or two at the most, and otherwise get very mad at you. You announced it, so give it to me already, take my money! Maybe Nokia doesn’t want that to happen this time.

So that’s my guess. I’m dead sure Nokia will bring new PureView technology to the Lumia range this year. But as it looks now, it’s not going to be announced at the Mobile World Congress. What do you think? Let’s hope for the best. I’m going anyway. Be sure to follow me on Twitter.

  1. [...] frustrating as well, although I see a few positive points. First the sad news: as more or less expected, PureView wasn’t mentioned at all. Many other – also older – terms were presented [...]

I think the 520 and 720 won’t be everything Nokia will announce, as they are nothing special aside from the price. One year ago the 808 was announced, so it would just be following the pattern. To announce too early does not have to be just bad, as some people might wait for an announced product instead of buying something from the competition. So the camera-Lumia could be announced now and come to shops in june, fine for me. The 808 has the price advantage now, as it cost only 2/3 of what i paid in July and thus is really cheap.

I don’t think it is good to announce now and launch in June.

Specially like Nokia does, that it launches in June in 1 country with a few thousand units to sell. And then doesn’t have anything to sell because they ran out of devices.

And when they come to a country like Brazil (that is now 4th largest smartphone country, AFAIK) they come with a product 6 months after it’s launch, a launch that was already 4 months delayed after announcement. In this time most competition has caught up and surpassed, and started selling their devices 2 months before you, so people couldn’t wait and bought the competitor device.

I know MANY people like this.

I really don’t know what Nokia was doing the last 2 years. They had over 80% market AND MIND share in Brazil. They still have about 30% mind share here, they are still considered a good brand, but a good brand that doesn’t launch anything for 6 months after other countries, and then brings their products horribly overpriced.

Who is going to pay premium price for a 6 months old device that is about to be replaced? They JUST launched Nokia 920 here, a week before they will (probably) announce it’s successor. And the Lumia 920 here is MORE expensive than iPhone 5 or SGS3 or Note 2.

They are losing what remains of their market and mind share very rapidly because they don’t care about this (and other) country(ies). They only care about US and this is their doomfall. This and Windows Phone been unknown for most people.

guess i was wrong :( nothing nice, just cheap stuff. So still wondering how the 808 successor will look and what it can do

Announcing something too early is not smart.

You cause people to not buy your current product (because it is obsolete) and in wait, they end up buying another product entirely.

Well technically, you have to think about this. If they announce a niche device early like the 808 or 808 successor, it won’t matter…simply because it is a niche device. Everyone on this website knows that the 808 is such a product, and the 808 successor will also. The average consumer is not going to want a super awesome cameraphone for a phone. Just like how the average consumer does not want a freakin 5.5″ phablet such as the Note 2.

I honestly think they did just perfectly fine for announcing the 808 at MWC and then later releasing it in the summer. It built up hype for the consumers who actually did want the product to wait for such a device. I think most of the time the consumer who doesn’t read forums/websites about tech will most likely choose the 920 over it’s aesthetic design than the actual camera. It’s hard to believe, but it is true…

Marc why are you sure they will bring it this year? Making it is one thing, making it economically viable for them is totally another.. designing something like that for WP is sure taking a lot of R&D money, it’s a big challenge to make it not too heavy not to mention other peculiarities(mind you lumia with its small sensor already has 185g). From some rumors stating that it will have interchangable lenses it is probably going to be something like Galaxy Camera = 300g heavy 2″ thick and actually not the phone at all. But nonetheless it would be very powerful device.

Also they have 808 that still sells well and actually covers (some percent of)WP losses…

I feel it in my bones. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking, but we’ll know that when this year is over – and we still have 10 months to go :-)

I think Nokia has already spent so much on R&D on the 808 technology and on bringing that to WP, it would be insane to throw that all away (although I must admit they’ve become pretty good at throwing things away).

There have been too many strong rumours from trusted sources on other blogs as well (see the posts over at MyNokiaBlog). Also mentioning the funny “banana” shaped concept phone I wrote about before (http://pureviewclub.com/2013/11283).

There are too many signs. It’s out there, somewhere. It’s in the air. It’s in the making. Yes, I’m a believer.

Doing something on a Symbian (RT OS) with nHD resolution and doing the same on a WP with (most probably) HD resolution and bigger screen is totally different ballpark. It all takes a lot more battery and will also require a lot more processing which also takes even more battery while everything of these just adds more and more weight..like a vicious circle, it’s not that simple.

I don’t doubt at all it’s in the making, however making it work and making it work while retaining relatively normal size/weight/autonomy is several lightyears from each other.

That’s why 808 is the perfect phone, because it achieves perfect balance between everything. What it lacks maybe is the OIS but not the heavy one like in lumia (as balancing huge sensor with springs is gonna add even more weight) but this gyro thing that HTC added to One, it is lighter but still gives very good results and would suit 808 perfectly to make it best also for casual photographers(hint: blue doors).

Hey America has been waiting for an 808 like device…it is time to bring it here.

As for Nokia…shouldn’t they be on a 6-12 month cycle on bringing flagships out to compete with other OEM flagships? Verizon users (I’m not one of them fortunately) are already complaining that their 920 Laser or whatever, is already hardware obsolete…which is insane I know…but still Nokia needs to push out flagships on a schedule just like every other OEM…at least here in the US. -otherwise they’ll fall behind.

And yea, I know most low end phones bring in more $$ to Nokia, which is something I personally find awesome about the company. -But still Nokia doesn’t have a huge presence here in the US just yet. I would think both MS and Nokia would want to change that.

Anyway, I’m not entirely sure what I just wrote above as I’ve been working on midterms the entire day…I’m tired…lol.

  5. Actually, search for StyleSaint in the Marketplace and you can confirm that the tile indeed is StyleSaint, a fashion magazine, or “your go to resource for all things style”

    So 720=Catwalk? would make sence

    • Marc @PureViewClub

It even has a Nokia logo! Thanks for the tip, installing now, maybe one day I’ll be a fashionista! :-)

  6. Louis

Marc, I think Nokia EOS is for Nokia World.

  7. The Black logo above Vouge looks like it could be http://www.stylesaint.com/

Look at the logo in the Tile and the Favicon for this site. Looks rather similar.

    • Marc @PureViewClub

Thank you, it has been suggested on Twitter now as well. Never heard of StyleSaint before. Fashion is not my forte :-)
