Just a blue door in the winter sun, captured close-up with the Nokia 808 and Lumia 920

You might have seen this door a bit earlier today. I drove past my favorite (and still closed) Beach Cafe near my work this morning, and saw the winter sun bringing out all the bright colors this small building is showing.

I parked the car and in a hurry (I was late for work…) I made a few shots with the Nokia 808 PureView and the Lumia 920, which is supposed to be “underperforming” in bright light. Well, judge for yourself. I chose for two shots in “portrait” mode, so I can share a much larger (and more detailed) result.

First the Nokia 808 PureView:

Next, the Nokia Lumia 920 (after the Portico update, I’d like to add)

I think the Nokia Lumia 920 is giving a very crisp result, with a bit more saturated colors. Not too much, but enough to please the eye. Although the Nokia 808 PureView might be more “realistic”, I really like how the Lumia 920 is performing. Wonder what you think of this.

Here’s a 640 x 640 crop showing the lock in both shots, showing the Nokia Lumia 920 is doing a fantastic job after the Portico update. Once more, first the Nokia 808 PureView

Next, the Nokia Lumia 920

I have to add this is just one shot, since clearly, the Lumia 920 has the better detail in this example – which is not really logical in itself. So maybe I moved a bit making the shot, maybe the lens wasn’t completely clean – I don’t know, it had to hurry.

Let me be perfectly clear there is no doubt in my mind the Nokia 808 PureView has the best camera overall. But I think it’s really important to show the Lumia 920 is performing extremely well after the Portico update – that’s why I’ve been eagerly waiting for it.

And yes, if you want to check the originals, they are on the PureViewClub Photostream on Flickr.

The Pureview 808 always has a blurry layer on top of everything which can only be removed by setting sharpness to +5 and increasing the sharpness in photoshop afterwards. I posted in the official forum about it, just in case they would take note and fix it in case they intend to have the same settings in the Nokia EOS, and they simply told me to check the FAQ’s. Someone was also saying “Out of 800 pictures I take the 500 come out blurry” It’s hard to explain but if you check out here:

and compare it to most of the cameras there is a sort of “Halo” around everything. I use the Heart at the top left corner of the card to compare.

based on the comparitor, the blurriness is just like you said, the lack of USM to the image. I personally think that this is a good thing, as it allows the user to further sharpen as necessary. It is better to have a non sharpened image than a sharpened one which you cannot remove the sharpness without sacrificing detail. This is especially the case when you have no Raw files to play with. I think nokia has done exactly what photographers want in their super mobile camera.

Also it may be possible that the “blurriness” in the full res image could be due to diffraction, due to packing 4mp into such a tiny sensor and optic.

I believe on the 8|0|8′s shot you did not move.. as humanly as possible.
On the 920, you did not move as humanly as possible too BUT the OIS came in to save the day..
    Pureview 1 + 2 = Pureview Perfection.

Hi, was this taken in pureview 8mp mode , or full res. I know full res 41mp does need higher shutter speeds, as any form of camera shake is amplified, the higher the Mega pixel

PureView all day. However the 808 will show your movement better. Since the camera is stronger.

  5. Surely the door moved… :-p

After the update, the 920′s camera results looks great.

if u had used a tripod then 808 would came out as GOD like always .

I believe you. But I just parked the car and went out to make a few shots before going to work. So apparantly I moved a bit, and I think I already wrote the outcome of the Nokia 808 should have been better. Crucify me ;-) I still think the Lumia 920 did a great job, don’t you?

      • bigs

I do not think there is any movement in the door from the 808 image, although the image is definitely not as sharp. That being said, the 920 shot is over sharp. It may look good on the screen, but do any kind of major enlargements, and the 808 will be better.

Also if you want this kind of sharpness, similar to the 920, just apply some sharpening or USM (unsharp mask), plus a bit of saturation and it will look identical

don’t take it to heart man . from ur aspect u are right.. i understand .. sometimes we just want to take shot(s) immediately . i was just saying 808 performs like god when u use a tripod . and LUMIA920 did a great job here .
