Nokia Time Warp III: unpacking the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, captured with the Nokia 808

As you might have noticed, I recently started a “Nokia Time Warp” series here at the PureViewClub – capturing the unpacking of an older – or even epic – Nokia device with the Nokia 808 PureView: as if it’s a new phone. The first Time Warp was the epic Nokia 7650, the second the (no less epic) Nokia 9000 Communicator.

It’s pretty hard to get to those classics in mint condition, but until now I manage  quite well and I have some (I hope) interesting Time Warps coming up. This one is about the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic from 2008. I never owned this device myself, but I know it was the starting point for David Detko from Hungary, who is becoming well-known for his shots with his Nokia N9 and 808 PureView

Compared to the later Nokia way of packaging its devices, I love the abundant way Nokia used to wrap up their phones: big boxes, colorful as Christmas gifts and full of accessories and extra information. Just love it.

Tons of shots after the break!

But I completely understand it’s far from being “green” so I love the new minimalistic way as well. But sometimes I miss the old way, and my guess is sometimes you do, too.

Here´s the backside, with Nokia bragging about all the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has to offer.

Time to open the box!

And there… is the phone itself. Carefully wrapped even.

Under the part of the box with the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, you will find all accessories… An impressive amount, I might add!

And of course, several booklets and “how-to’s”…

It even came with a special case

And also, software on a small disk

Here’s the backside of the disk’s sleeve

And here is the naked phone…

The undressed naked phone…

The uncovered 3.2 MP Carl Zeiss lens of the Nokia 5300 XpressMusic

The inside of the back cover…

And yes, it starts up!

Connecting people…

A few close-ups from the several sides of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic – a pretty thick device, but not heavy at all!

Notice the stylus holder on the corner…

Like noted, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has a stylus, to make it easier to work with the resistive touchscreen…

And to repay the favor, here the Nokia 808 PureView, captured with… the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic! :-)

All in all, this Time Warp unpacking the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has been fun, the device didn’t disappoint me, even though it’s five years old by now!

Looks like it’s an interesting device still, if you are looking for a cheap second hand phone for whatever reason. If you can get it in original state with all accessories, that is.

There is more on your way in the Nokia Time Warp – I really hope you enjoy them! :-)

Great read! Still use my 5800XM as an alarm clock with SPB Time. Miss some of the features on my Lumia 800. There is also a 808 in our house, but that belongs to my wife. My N8 broke down, helas.

Maybe you could consider unpacking the Samsung i8910. Not a Nokia, obviously, but a great Symbian cam phone for its time.

Nice, I will be interested to see E71 – the phone which brought back Eseries and N82 in this time wrap.

I am surprised at how similar to the 808 it is.

  4. Oh yes, I loved! Now, my dad used but still fine, works great! Did you know that when you remove the back cover, you can made much better photos? :) http://500px.com/IIDave/sets/nokia_5800_xpressmusic_where_it_all_began

great to see the device that started touchscreen technology in Symbian OS.
Would be interesting to see next Nokia 6230, or the odd Nokia 3650.

This box has more accessories than I got in mine. You’re lucky :)
