Nokia and The Portico Mystery

Yes, it sounds a bit like a pretty cheap thriller, doesn’t it? Well, in a way, it is. I really don’t get it. I’ve been complaining about the US getting the Portico update – updating the Nokia Lumia 920 to PR 1.1 – way before the other launching countries in Europe (like Germany, France, Italy and the UK).

I’ve started quite a pathetic twitter petition, asking people to RT a message begging @Nokia and @selop (being CEO Stephen Elop) to offer the Portico update to Europe as soon as possible. Quite a lot of people retweeted that message, but there was not one reaction nevertheless.

That didn’t really surprise me.

When I complained once again about it in my Twitter timeline, someone suggested I should be patient until all the bugs were eliminated. Wait for a perfect update. And I kind of understood, since sure, in the past too many early adopters have been abused as voluntary software testers (starting with the N96 and N97 in particular).

But now, I know (for a fact) that the new customers buying the Nokia Lumia 920 in the Netherlands will get the device with the PR1.1 software: Portico. I just learned a friend in Mumbai got the device with the latest software as well. So quite simply put: it’s out there. It’s not being tested anymore, it’s already available on the newest devices.

So why is the newest software version of this very expensive smartphone not pushed to the early adopters? I just don’t get it… Anyone?

(I borrowed the pic from PhoneArena since I can’t make it myself - thanks guys).

Update: there was some positive news today about the start of a global roll-out of the Portico update, but that proved to be too optimistic, I now read on WPCentral. Insert four letters here [....]

NOKIA has announced a new batch of PR1.1 releases is rolling out OTA! Everyone should be updated for mid-march. Cross your fingers we don’t have to wait until march!

That’s why I sold my Lumia some weeks ago ;).
The photo quality of the 920 was not acceptable…even after the portico update…@Nokia/Microsoft – don’t hit the market with unfinished firmware products…

Don’t agree with you here I have updated the phone and I can tell u the photo quality is just one step down than 808 & in low lights its the king of smartphones and in video quality it produces smooth and awesome quality that not even 808 can produce

I preordered my Lumia at October 2012, I’m from Italy, and since I could’t wait until February, I’ve just updated via Nokia Product Support Tool to Portico.

I am in Australia using Telstra, still no update. The camera at the moment is pretty much unusable in daylight :(

    • Marc @PureViewClub

Unusable in daylight? Check your settings… Maybe you’ve got your ISO settings still too high or you are using Night mode all the time. There is no daylight problem with the Nokia Lumia 920. Sometimes pics get a bit blurry in the background. There are tons of pictures on this site to prove daylight is not a problem.

It’s probably Microsoft that should be questioned.

  7. this is odd. most of the time what you see is US variants of phones getting updates way after every one else. this is largely due to carrier locks and restraints. i wouldn’t know why we’d get this update before all of you. maybe it’s some sort of balancing act. more likely corporate politics or red tape, though.

  8. Oh yes, and they did same with WP7.8 – if you buy new Lumia 610, it has 7.8 already in. My 800? No update so far.

  9. I remember MS employee tweeting “yes there will be WP9 update to WP8 devices”, but unable to find it. Instead, there is this http://gizmodo.com/5919970/windows-phone-8-devices-will-get-ota-updates-and-18-months-of-firmware-support

This is something only nokia can answer. I have been using this handset for two days now and I am learning it. But let me be frank it’s not as friendly as an iphone but I like the modern looks of it which makes up for it.

Marc just one personal question, how long do u think windows phone 8 will keep getting updates . For example iPhone 3GS came with iOs 3.0 and now It’s still supported till iOS 6 .

Do u think windows phones like lumia 920 will be updated to windows 9

    • Marc @PureViewClub

Well Nikhil, that is something only Nokia can answer as well… But my guess is the current specs are quite future proof. And we are quite far away from WP9.
