Visiting the world famous Cologne Cathedral

After visiting the Photokina I had some time to see the famous Cathedral in Cologne. It’s one stop from where the Photokina takes place, and in the main station of Cologne you’ll see a sign which way to go to find it. I didn’t know the exit of the main station is directly next to the cathedral, so I was overwhelmed by it directly.

Some things are just bigger than life. Impossible to capture in a picture, especially at close range. But I tried making some memorable shots with the Nokia 808 PureView of course. Since this is a place that is really world famous I’ll share a good dozen of pictures I took from the outside (in a very bright late afternoon sun) and inside – quite dark of course, and incredibly big. Large. Huge. Immense.

The few pictures you see here are resized of course. I took most in full resolution, hoping to be able to zoom in on lots details, since there is such an incredible amount of them. So I took the risk of noise in the pictures. You can find all pictures in their original sizes in the special set on the PureViewClub Photostream on Flickr.

I have been playing around with the settings on the 808 a lot, especially inside the cathedral, but also trying to control the bright light outside. It wasn’t always easy, but I’ll share them anyway. I truly hope you will enjoy viewing these shots as I did making them.

That’s all for here, like I wrote you can find all pictures in their original sizes in the special set on the PureViewClub Photostream on Flickr. See you there :-)

Nice pictures! My first response was “Too bad Marc didn’t tried the bracketing mode”. Maybe next time :D

Maybe I should have tried, but I didn’t have my tripod with me, so HDR seemed quite impossible in such dark circumstances…

I visited the Cathedral for the first time myself, a couple of months ago. I tried to take some shots with my N8 ans was rather disappointed about the image quality. My point is: for the first time now, i can make a direct comparison between my N8 and the 808 “in the field” (even under apparently similar light conditions) and i have to say – im blown away. Totally.
    Thanks alot for the pics!

Don’t bee too quick with your conclusions. Always show respect to the circumstances.
When you were trying to take pictures of the Kölner Dom with the N8, was it the same setting: light, shadow, daytime….

I once was in Cologne in winter and took inddor shots of the Kölner Dom with a DSLR and failed. The light was missing and I did not have any powerful flash with me.

Well, judging from the EXIF-data from the 808, the daytime was identical. And in both cases, it was sunny. So, for the outdoor shots, the 808 wins clearly under apparently similar conditions.

Inddors, nearly all of my images are either blurred or grained (depending on ISO), or, when a window was in the picture, partially over-exposed. Here too, the 808 worked much better.

          Thanks for the informazion.
The 808 dropped under 500 euro on amazon.de if you like the white version

Well Markus, what can I say? Thank you, I’ll take it as a big compliment! :-)

    @civichief

what do you mean? Softness? Yeah the corners are soft.
And distortion is clearly visoble here:

It is barely visible in normal photos but when you compare to a good camera you’ll see it, It’s like … wohoooo, what happened, why is the worls that twisted:
    Correct: Olympus PEN

    Huge distortion: 808

maybe it is a software thing because in the lower left corner of the cathedral, everything seems ok:

But in the lower right corner, where the picture is also darker, the lines going to to center top seem to be bent. Seems so!

anyway, this shot gives me a good impression of the amount of wide angle in this Carl-Zeiss-lense.

The Olympus PEN has more chromatic abberation than the 808 in these pictures. This could be because of a little bit too much oversharpening though. Appart from the colour difference I don’t find the 808 pic bad. In fact I find it rather good.

why is there so much distortion in this picture in the right lower corner?

    because of the wide angle?

But the picture proves, that the 808 can catch a lot of details even from that distance.
