The Dutch journalist Tonie van Ringelestijn (@tonie) took the Nokia 808 PureView to a venue in Amsterdam (De Melkweg, probably more famous under it’s English name “The Milky Way”). He recorded during a rock concert by Kurt Vile. Below you will find his song Hunchback.
Now this is not my kind of music, but it IS my kind of recording! I am sure every other smartphone would fail to record this – probably any other device would. I’ve been stressing this point from the very beginning: Rich Recording is in fact as innovative as PureView itself.

That’s not loud enough to test the 808′s limits. Try a Manowar concert!
These recording capabilities are probably enough to buy one. I doubt you can find such a good pocketable camera at that price range.
Its like being at the gig! The sound is so sharp and clear, none of the normal fuzz at all at all! Is this a standard feature when recording, or a separate program/app that you must run at the same time?
I just listened to 6 Paul Simon and Ladysmith Black Mambazo songs at his Concert thats going on at the moment in Dublin thanks to my brother’s awful old phone, I wonder if Rich Recording has any input on the sound-broadcasting side of the 808 Pureview?
Rich Recording is a standard feature of the 808. It made a deep impression on me the first time I heard it. Glad to see you understand why.
Its a good video, the sound is unbelievable …. the 808 is the live bootleggers dream device!
However … were they deafeningly loud?
I’m going to be recording a local band (very, very heavy metal) on Sunday night who are quite ridiculously loud; last time I saw them the N8 couldn’t even begin to cope with the volume. Heck, my ears couldn’t cope!
I’ll have to bring the N8 along for comparison :)
I’m quite sure it was deafening in Amsterdam. Bring good earplugs where you are going, seriously – I heard someone’s eardrums snapped during a concert at the North Sea Jazz, it can be dangerously loud. And than record whatever you’re trying to listen to with the N8 and with the 808. I’d be thrilled to share both video’s here.

OMG…OMG..this was the ultimate TEST. The quality audio was just unbelievable…even better, I went a step further by running the audio from the computer to my home stereo. Wow, like you, Rock music is not my favorite genre, but it appears that this Rich Recording feature is freaking amazing. When I get this handset, my ultimate test will taking it to a REGGAE concert for the ultimate low & high frequencies. Nice video. Good job.
Well, I think my ambulance was a pretty good test as well, and the video with the F18 in Finland wasn’t bad either. But still, this is a very good, if not ultimate test.
For sure…saw both those videos. The high from the ambulance and the sonic boom from the F18 fly by. But I will just be curious to see how it handles the constant low bass & mid-range frequencies (together) that one hears at a live reggae show/concert, be it indoors or outdoors. I know here in South Florida, these concerts are a big draw but you can’t bring good video devices with you. Hence, the Nokia 808 will certainly be allowed entry. Why? It is also a phone. Waiting for the black to hit Amazon. I have zero interest in what the haters may say…NONE. I love taking pictures, so taking videos will be my next hobby.
A big “Thank You” for this inspiring site….Here’s a conspiracy theory. Do you think the same 41MP will ever be, or can be ported to WP8 units? After all, we know who made the lens, the process used to manufacture the lens, plus the size sensor. Can the lens get any smaller to minimize the overall thickness for future WP devices…
A big “You’re Welcome”, Ray Ray, thanks! As to your conspiracy theory: I don’t have a clue, really. But I’m getting the feeling the 808 PureView will be one of a kind, a innovative landmark, actually the best Nokia ever thought of, I’d like to add. PureView technology will be ported to Windows Phone, no doubt. But the 41MP sensor… Not if you want it to be thin I guess. Your guess is as good as mine.
My guess is that we will have the “21mpx” “pureview”.
Why?
Because we live in an era of FORM OVER FUNCTION. So it is better to be a beautiful, slim phone, than a beast that can produce awesome photos.
AND, because I don’t think WP8 is mature enough to allow co-processing the way 808 does. And the actual processor inside can only handle up to 20mpx, as per the specs of WP8.
+1
Maybe it will be tagged as “slightlylesspureview”
The 808 tackles the loudness and the low frequency quite greatly.
You’re right, Rich Recording is also a true innovation or may be a revolution as far as inbulit audio recording is concerned.
The only question in my mind is how real the audio is, compared to the what was heard by the human ear?
You mean the human ear that without any protection probably didn’t hear much at all directly after the concert? I don’t know :-)
Haha…right
